Hi.

Welcome to the Average Al blog. An honest view of pregnancy and motherhood through the eyes of a first time Mum (to be).

#4 Maternity wear

#4 Maternity wear

I love clothes! I always have and always will. The right piece of clothing can make you feel fantastic, even a lush pair of joggers can make you feel fab sulking around the house. To me, the outfit you are wearing can represent who you are and how you feel. After saying all this, I must say I HATE MATERNITY CLOTHES!!

After the first trimester you normally ‘start to show’ and your usual wardrobe becomes uncomfortable. You can only use a hair band to expand your jeans for so long. At this time I took to my favourite online store ASOS to purchase a few essentials. I initially went for three pairs of under the bump skinny jeans. I hated almost every pair! Some were ASOS own brand, some were high street but not one pair were skinny fit. All too long, apparently short people don’t have babies, and all ill fitting. I kept one pair that I could make work and continued the hunt for something comfy yet stylish.

Perhaps I struggled as I refused to spend too much money on maternity clothing as, I hope, I won't be wearing it in a few months time. I also believe that until you are at the obvious bump stage maternity wear just does fit properly. There were a good few weeks where nothing fitted, pre-pregnancy wardrobe or maternity wear.

Once I got to around 6 months I finally found a pair on jeans that wear comfortable, affordable yet slightly too long but 2 out of three, WIN. I popped into a local H&M and found their MAMA skinny jeans that are over the bump. I repeat over the bump! Holy moly the comfort. I have lived in these jeans since purchasing and would highly recommend.

My other favourite purchases are my blue corduroy dungarees from Topshop. God, I love these and have been converted to the corduroy way of life. I am currently eyeing up the pink none-maternity ones from Topshop for when I’m closer to my pre-pregnancy weight/size.

WIth regards to tops and dresses, I have managed to use most of my pre-pregnancy items. I’ve always loved an oversized shirt and a long t-shirt which has come in handy in the last few months.

Finally, for anyone looking for a bit of inspo, I recently stumbled onto Zoe de Pass’ instragram (@dresslikeamum). She is nailing being pregnant and stylish. I wish I had found her page sooner.
